Women’s health differs from that of men in many unique ways. Women’s health is an example of population health, where health is defined by the World Health Organization as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. Nowadays, women’s centers provide the best care and services to improve women’s health
A Women’s Center offers many benefits for female visitors who are about to become an adult or mature women. Specialists or OB-GYN can help provide you with a variety of services that pertain to female health with compassion and confidentiality.
What is an OB-GYN?
An obstetrician-gynecologist, or OB-GYN, is a doctor who has broad and specific training in obstetrics and gynecology. OB-GYNs provide a wide range of preventive care services, including pap smears, STI testing, pelvic exams, ultrasounds, and blood work. They can answer a person’s questions about pregnancy, sex, reproductive health, infertility, and numerous other topics.
Though recommendations vary with age and change over time, many women see their OB-GYNs at least once a year. Some use these physicians as their primary or only doctors.
What Procedures Can They Perform?
OB-GYNs are trained surgeons who can perform a wide range of procedures, including:
- dilation and curettage
- biopsy
- tubal ligation for female sterilization
- laser surgery
- hysterectomy, or the removal of the uterus
- myomectomy, or the removal of fibroids
- in vitro fertilization
- vaginal delivery
- cesarean delivery
- amniocentesis to determine sex and detect any abnormalities

What Conditions Do OB-GYNs Treat?

- pelvic pain
- genital itching
- urinary incontinence

When should I see an OB-GYN?
A person should first visit an OB-GYN between the ages of 13 and 15. This visit will establish a relationship between the teenager and the doctor.
The doctor will not typically perform a pelvic exam if the individual has no medical problems and is not sexually active. A person should have their first pelvic exam and pap test around the age of 21 or when they first become sexually active.
All women should see their gynecologist annually for a well-woman visit. The specific tests a person needs at each visit vary with age, lifestyle, and health risk factors.
People should see their OB-GYN if they think they might be pregnant or for any reproductive system issues.
