What is Orthopedics?
Orthopedics is derived from the French word orthopédie, which itself derived from the Greek words ὀρθός (correct) and παιδίον (child). As reflected by the name, Ancient Orthopedics are mainly focused on correcting musculoskeletal deformities in children. Later, Orthopedics was developed into a method for the treatment of injured soldiers on the battlefield. Currently, Modern Orthopedics has evolved into a medical procedure for correction of deformities, disorders, or injuries of the musculoskeletal and their associated structures such as tendons and ligaments.
What can be treated by orthopedists?
Orthopedists are trained to treat varieties of musculoskeletal conditions. Thus, those abnormalities can be recognized into five groups
- Bones: Most common treatment for bone is the treatment of bone fractures. Orthopedists are also responsible for other bone diseases including osteoporosis or low bone mass, bone resorption, bone inflammation, and removal of bone tumours and soft tissue sarcomas.
- Joints: Major joints being treated by orthopedists are the shoulder, elbow, hip and knees, which can be done by a total joint reconstruction or arthroplasty, and complete joint replacement. Orthopedists are also responsible for the treatment of joint pain from chondritis, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid’s disease.
- Spine: Treatment of back and neck pain is mostly related to the treatment of the spine. Orthopedists are trained to deal with disc protrusions, disc herniation, spondylolisthesis, myelopathy, and problems with nerves and nerves canal including carpal tunnel syndrome.
- Sports medicine: Overuse of muscle and tendons, and sports-related injuries including sprains, tendinitis, meniscus tears, and tears of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is also the responsibility of speciality trained orthopedists and physiotherapists.
- Children’s Orthopedics: Children’s orthopedists are specialists in musculoskeletal abnormalities related to the growing process, making them available for the treatment of clubfoot, scoliosis, limb deformities, issue in walking or movings, and issues in bone and tissue growth.

As a result, visiting orthopedists will be a greatly benefit if you have persistent or chronic pain that worsen your comfort or range of motion or having direct injuries on bones, joints, or muscles.
Is surgery needed for Orthopedics treatment?
Orthopedics treatment can be both surgical and non-surgical. Physical therapy are one of the most prevalent form of non-surgical procedure and can be very effective with early stage of sprains and strains. Medication are being used for reducing swelling, stiffness, and pain. Regenerative medicine such as using of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and Stem Cells is also an options for orthopedist. Other non-surgical procedure including manipulation and distention, radiofrequency ablation, viscosupplementation, and nerve blocks.
Although, some kind of injury have surgery as an only choice. Those are including joint infections, nerve damage, open bone fractures, and pain or weakness in your arms or legs. Some chronic conditions also need to be relieved with surgery. However, there are options for minimal-invasive surgeries, using surgery aid such as arthroscopy, belong with traditional open incisions.
What to concern about when choosing Orthopedics treatment?
If you suffer with pain for more than 12 weeks, diificulty standing or moving around, limited range of motion, or acute injury which is not responding with basic measure, you need to consult with a specialist in orthopedics. Looking for a physician who is board-certified, received an accredited fellowship in a sub-specialty related to your condition or suspected condition, and being supported by nurse, therapists, rehabilitation devices, imaging devices, and surgery aids.
When consulting with your orthopedists, ask them for your current conditions of pain or difficulties, options on treatment and their treatment plan, benefits from the treatment and what you need to do to get the best results.
