Musculoskeletal Center

Your body’s musculoskeletal system comprises your bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons, and nerves. A problem in any of these areas can significantly affect your quality of life.

Approximately 1.71 billion people have musculoskeletal conditions worldwide. Musculoskeletal conditions are the leading contributor to disability worldwide, with low back pain being the single leading cause of disability in 160 countries.

Musculoskeletal conditions significantly limit mobility and dexterity, leading to early retirement from work, lower levels of well-being, and reduced ability to participate in society.

Thus, musculoskeletal health plays an indispensable role in improving the quality of life in modern society.

What is Musculoskeletal Health?

The musculoskeletal system is an essential component of human health. In addition to providing the body with structure and the means for movement, the musculoskeletal system acts as an endocrine system, stimulated by exercise, interacting through biochemical signaling with other organs in the body.

Exercise, working through muscle and bone interactions, is important in maintaining health. Lack of exercise leads to obesity and increased complications such as diabetes and metabolic disease.

People might face new challenges in maintaining musculoskeletal health as the aging process complicates the interactions between muscle and bone. As the population ages, the conditions of sarcopenia, osteoporosis, and arthritis will increase, as will hip and knee replacements.

Musculoskeletal disorders are the leading cause of disability, impacting the quality of life and longevity. They encompass a broad range of conditions that impair regular activity due to injury, pain or disease of the bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons. Many of these disorders are associated with or made more complex by the aging process.

Musculoskeletal Conditions

Musculoskeletal conditions are typically characterized by pain (often persistent) and limitations in mobility and dexterity, reducing people’s ability to work and participate in society. Pain experienced in musculoskeletal structures is the most common form of non-cancer pain.

Musculoskeletal conditions are relevant across the life course – from childhood to older age. They range from those conditions that arise suddenly (such as fractures, sprains, and strains associated with pain and limitations in functioning) to long-term conditions such as chronic primary low back pain and osteoarthritis.

Examples of musculoskeletal conditions are:

  • Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is the weakening of bones that occurs when the body loses bone tissue that is not adequately replaced.

  • Arthritis

Arthritis is common and can be debilitating. Osteoarthritis results from the deterioration of the cartilage that coats and cushions bones, enabling joints to operate smoothly. Loss of cartilage results in pain, swelling, and movement problems.

  • Bone and Joint Problems

Bone and joint problems can be associated with other conditions, such as diabetes, chronic kidney disease, or genetic disorders.

  • Bone Cancer
Several types of cancer can originate in bone tissue. In addition, multiple myeloma, a blood plasma cancer, causes abnormalities in the bone marrow and other bone tissues.
  • Bone Fractures

Bone fractures are a common injury subject to a broad range of research, from surgical techniques to compounds to promote healing to issues of nutrition and rehabilitation.

Musculoskeletal conditions are also the highest contributor to the global need for rehabilitation. They are among the largest contributors to the need for rehabilitation services among children and account for approximately two-thirds of all adults in need of rehabilitation.

When Should You Visit a Musculoskeletal Center?

Signs that you should visit a musculoskeletal center are symptoms such as:

  • recurrent pain
  • stiff joints
  • swelling
  • dull aches

They can affect any significant area of your musculoskeletal system, including the following:

  • neck
  • shoulders
  • wrists
  • back
  • hips
  • legs
  • knees
  • feet

These symptoms sometimes interfere with everyday activities like walking or typing. You may develop a limited range of motion or have trouble completing routine tasks. Therefore, you should see a doctor before the symptoms worsen.
