What is Hemodialysis?
Hemodialysis is a treatment in which your blood is filtered using a dialysis machine (dialyser) or artificial kidney. The device is divided into two sections, one for blood and one for dialysate or washing fluid, separated by a thin membrane. A hemodialysis machine, like a kidney, reduces wastes and excess fluid in your blood by separating blood cells, proteins, and other substances from smaller wastes like urea, creatinine, potassium, and excessive fluid across a thin membrane. The membrane would allow waste from your blood to pass into the dialysate, cleaning it away from your body. The blood that returns from the machine to your body will be cleaner and ready to process waste from various organs.
How is Hemodialysis done?
Hemodialysis begins with a minor surgery to provide hemodialysis access, which is commonly accomplished by placing a fistula or a synthetic graft through your arms. This access will be used in connecting your blood vessel to the hemodialysis machine using air-tight tubes. The blood will be pumped through the dialyzer during the process. Symptoms like cramps, headaches, nausea, or dizziness may occur throughout the procedure, although they are uncommon. Following completion, the tubings will be disconnected from your blood vessel and the equipment.
Hemodialysis can be performed at home or at a hospital-based dialysis center. Your doctor will give you a prescription that specifies how many treatments you require. Hemodialysis is typically performed three times a week for four hours at a time. People who opt to conduct hemodialysis at home may do it more frequently, four to seven times per week for shorter periods of time each time.
Who needs Hemodialysis and When?
Hemodialysis is crucial for people with chronic kidney disease (kidney failure) or end-stage renal disease (ESRD)
Dialysis may be required just until the kidneys recover in situations of sudden or acute renal failure after a severe illness or injury. However, unless you are able to have a kidney transplant, you will require dialysis for the rest of your life if you have chronic renal disease or kidney failure.
Despite the fact that hemodialysis is frequently required, the only modifications in your habits are to increase your protein intake and decrease the quantity of potassium, phosphorus, sodium, and fluid in your diet to improve the hemodialysis process. Dialysis patients can continue to work or travel because high-quality hemodialysis treatment facilities are widely available.
