Coronary Angioplasty

Coronary Angioplasty also called a balloon angioplasty is a medical procedure to widen narrowed arteries of the heart caused by coronary artery disease. A thin flexible tube (catheter) with a tiny balloon at the tip enters through a small incision made at the groin or wrist and is guided to the blocked coronary artery. Once the catheter is in place the balloon is inflated to expand at the narrowed area and presses on the plaque deposits or clot against the artery walls to widen the blood vessels, clearing the blockage and improving blood flow to the heart. After the artery is stretched, the balloon is deflated and the catheter is removed.

Stent placement to treat coronary artery stenosis
In case of severe blockage and the doctor considers that the artery wall is not wide enough, a small stent will be inserted to attach to the artery wall. In some cases, a drug-coated stent may be used instead of a conventional stent, due to the polymer coated being gradually released to the desired area of treatment, which reduces tissue growth around the stent insertion area and also helps to increase the efficiency of dilating blood vessels. This reduces the risks and complications that may occur after the insertion including reducing the problem of recurring artery stenosis. However, the stent selection will be considered by the specialist.

In case of large amounts of fatty or calcium deposits or stenosis. Specialists may consider treatment by Coronary Angiography Technique using “High-frequency burr (Rotablator)”, which can be continued after a coronary angiography has been completed or can be appointed to be performed later.

Indications that coronary artery angioplasty with balloon and stent should be performed

• Persistent chest pain
• Patients who have a narrowed or blockage of coronary arteries
• Patients who previously had a coronary artery bypass surgery to treat a blockage or narrowing of one or more of the coronary arteries and the area has closed or narrowed
